5 years Awite in Brazil - 50 projects experience

6 July 2022 marks the day for our subsidiary in Brazil to celebrate the 5th anniversary of its foundation. On this occasion, we would like to give a brief overview over the past 5 years.

In fact, the contacts to Brazil had already been intensified 2 years earlier, when it got more concrete that our employee Christian would emigrate to Brazil together with his family and start this adventure together with Awite in Germany.

One of the first and to date very important steps for Awite has been the partnership with the Brazilian cogeneration plant manufacturer CHP Brasil since 2016 and the start of the first projects in the agricultural sector with the objective of getting a grip on or even better eliminating the hydrogen sulphide concentration in lagoon plants by means of a controlled AwiDESULF desulphurisation in combination with our AwiFLEX. 25 successful projects were implemented together with CHP in recent years, even beyond Brazil, and we are looking forward to the next ones.

Following the founding of the company, with Christian as a pioneer on the ground in Brazil and numerous project visits from Germany, as well as highly motivated project partners, we started a funded DeveloPPP project (reference to AwiGossip I/2021 with project presentation). During this project, we had the opportunity to organise events, participate in events, make many contacts, and carry out three extraordinarily interesting projects in the agricultural field, in the laboratory field, and with the metrological equipment of a Bulli as a grand finale in 2019. Nice to see that our Bulli is still busy on the road and is being used.

Just a few weeks after our 5th anniversary, we can proudly announce that the 50th project is in the bag and will soon be delivered to our new customer MWM in Brazil.

We would especially like to thank Christian for his intensive work and his tireless perseverance as “king of the road”. No less thanks go to our partners, project partners, customers, interested parties and most sincerely to our large Brazilian fan community in the social media.

THE PRINCIPLE OF AWITE'S MODULAR SYSTEM FOR A BIOGAS PLANT IN BRANDENBURG

For the Klein-Eichholz biogas plant of pure power GmbH & Co. KG in Bandenburg, the modular principle of the AwiFLEX XL [A] was used in project GA-03770. In the biogas plant, food waste is converted into electricity, heat and fertiliser.

The first task was to monitor the entire biogas process, from gas production to treatment and use. To achieve this, the hydrolysis tank, three fermenters, two fermentation product stores, the biodiesel bed reactor and four activated carbon filters are automatically monitored with regard to the gases H₂, CH₄, CO₂, O₂ and H₂S in different measuring ranges. In addition, a CO measurement is installed after the activated carbon filters (TRAS 120).

The modules for this are the AwiFLEX XL [A] with seven sensors and the AwiSamplex [B] (measuring point switch-over) for a total of twelve measuring points. Due to the spatial distribution of the measuring points (>100m), the AwiVac [C] amplifier pump is integrated as well. The AwiVac allows for measuring gas lines up to 300m and measuring points in the negative pressure range (up to –350 mbar rel. negative pressure). With sample gas recirculation, the gas analysis system is integrated into the existing biogas flow, without gas losses. The customer’s measured values are sent to the plant control system via a ProfiNET interface and AwiRemote enables the remote access. The selected modules were used to implement a custom-fit solution for the biogas plant in Klein-Eichholz in a gas analysis system that nevertheless leaves room for future extensions.

Gas analysis systems from Awite as an important component of a biological power-to-gas plant in Switzerland

Zwei Gasanalysesysteme von Awite sind maßgeblicher messtechnischer Bestandteil der ersten industriellen Power-to-Gas Anlage der Schweiz und damit einer der ersten Anlagen weltweit. Die Anlage wurde errichtet von unserem Kunden, der Hitachi Zosen Inova Schmack GmbH, für den Endkunden und Betreiber Limeco in Dietikon.

Die Inbetriebnahme konnte Ende April 2022 gefeiert werden. Die Anlage liefert seither einen erheblichen Beitrag auf dem Weg zur Klimaneutralität und Unabhängigkeit von fossilen Energieträgern in der Region. Wir hoffen, dass viele Kommunen und Firmen diesem Beispiel folgen und wir Teil der Energiewende sein dürfen.

Die Power-to-Gas-Anlage nutzt erneuerbaren Strom aus der Kehrichtverwertungsanlage, um mit einer 2,5 MW Elektrolyse 450 m³/h Wasserstoff zu produzieren. Dieser wird mit dem CO₂ im Klärgas bzw. dem Klärgas (1,8 Mio. m³/Jahr) gemischt, wodurch erneuerbares Methangas entsteht (bis zu 18.000 MWh/Jahr). Aus Abfall und Abwasser gewinnt Limeco so einen erneuerbaren Energieträger. Ins bestehende Gasnetz eingespeist, ersetzt das CO₂-neutrale Gas fossile Energieträger und spart pro Jahr 5.000 Tonnen CO₂ ein (~ 2.000 Haushalte).

Awite hat bei diesem Projekt die anspruchsvolle Aufgabe, mit zwei unabhängigen Systemen verschiedene sensible Schnittstellen im Prozess qualitativ zu erfassen. Unser Gasanalysesystem GA-03296 kontrolliert kontinuierlich jeweils den Rohbiogasstrom aus der Kläranlage, sowie den Eduktgasstrom, der der biologischen Methanisierung zugeführt wird, auf die Parameter CH₄, CO₂, O₂, H₂ und H₂S.

Mit dem zweiten Gasanalysesystem GA-03297 wird es noch spannender. Hier überwacht das Gasanalysesystem kontinuierlich sowohl das Ergebnis aus der biologischen Methanisierung und ist damit wichtiger Bestandteil der Regelung dieses Prozesses. Zudem wird der letzte Reinigungsschritt, die Entfernung und Rückführung von überschüssigem Wasserstoff (mittels einem Membranverfahren) in dem Prozess überwacht und last but not least wird kontinuierlich und redundant sichergestellt, dass die Gasqualität am Einspeisepunkt ins Erdgasnetz der Norm entspricht.
