Innovative Concept Increases Biomethane Yield Using Green Hydrogen<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

At the B\u00fctzberg Biogas and Composting Plant (BKW), operated by MVR M\u00fcllverwertung Rugenberger Damm GmbH<\/a><\/span> \u2013 a company of the Stadtreinigung Hamburg<\/a><\/span> (SRH) \u2013 self-generated green hydrogen (H\u2082) is being used to increase the yield of biomethane.\u00a0<\/p>

The BKW processes the contents of 150,000 organic waste bins from the Hanseatic city each year in three dry fermentation lines, producing around one million cubic metres of biomethane and 17,000 tonnes of compost. In order to enhance the biomethane yield, the biogas plant has been combined with Power-to-Gas (PtG) technology. For this purpose, green hydrogen is injected into 14 of the total 21 garage fermenters. The hydrogen is generated using a 1,0 MW electrolyser. The electricity required for this process is sourced from renewable energy via a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).<\/p>

The additional hydrogen is converted into methane during the biogas process through microbial methanation, reacting with the CO\u2082 present. This enables an increase in biomethane yield of up to 20%. This combination of dry fermentation and PtG technology is unique in Germany. Three AwiFLEX XL<\/a><\/span> gas analysis systems are used to monitor the process. Two identical systems each monitor seven garage fermenters and the main gas collection line of the digestion system. To ensure reliable monitoring during the start-up and shut-down of the individual fermenters, continuous measurement of CH\u2084, CO\u2082, O\u2082, and H\u2082 is carried out. Depending on utilisation, the measurement can be switched to each individual fermenter. H\u2082S is also measured intermittently.<\/p>

The third gas analysis system continuously monitors gas quality before and after the biogas upgrading process. It is equipped with an automatic range-switching feature for hydrogen. Depending on the amount of H\u2082 dosed into the process, it switches between an electrochemical sensor (0\u201350,000 ppm) and a thermal conductivity sensor (0\u2013100%).<\/p>

Hydrogen is highly reactive, volatile (14 times lighter than air), and the smallest chemical element, with a high diffusion rate. These properties are taken into account in the gas analysis system design through the use of PTFE (Teflon) tubing, detonation flame arrestors, and internal hydrogen monitoring.<\/p>

All gas analysis systems feature automatic calibration, gas coolers, remote access, and redundant gas sampling pumps to ensure maximum measurement accuracy and reliability.<\/p>

PtG technology offers numerous advantages, including improved CO\u2082 efficiency in the biogas process, chemical storage of renewable electricity, utilisation of power surpluses, and integration into the existing gas and electricity infrastructure \u2013 to name just a few.<\/p>

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWith our chests swelling with pride \u2013 and in size 9x XL \u2013 we\u2019re delighted to present the largest individual project to date undertaken by our Brazilian subsidiary, Awite Sistemas de An\u00e1lise de Gases Ltda, for the plant manufacturer Gruen Biog\u00e1s<\/span><\/a>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For this project at the Paul\u00ednia landfill site near S\u00e3o Paulo, Gruen Biog\u00e1s combines years of expertise with local manufacturing and service capabilities. S\u00e3o Paulo, with a population of 11.9 million (2024), is the largest city in Brazil and offers enormous potential for landfill gas production.<\/p>

The landfill gas will be treated in four parallel processing lines, each equipped with two PSA systems, which will gradually remove CO\u2082 and N\u2082 (see image, plant layout). A ninth central PSA unit follows at the end to safely eliminate any remaining nitrogen. The facility is designed to process up to 20,000 m\u00b3\/h of landfill gas into biomethane, which will then be fed into the national gas grid. Commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2026.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The nine AwiFLEX XL units will monitor the entire system \u2013 from raw gas and activated carbon filters through to the final biomethane product. A total of 46 measurement points are installed, with 15 operating continuously, 16 quasi-continuously, and 16 discontinuously. Each system performs three simultaneous measurements. In addition, the systems feature automatic condensate drains and calibrations.<\/p>

The modular design of the AwiFLEX XL is fully leveraged in this project (see image after calibration), allowing a wide range of gas analysis tasks to be bundled into just nine systems.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Since June 2024, Instrumatics Equipment Ltd.<\/a><\/span> has been working with us to develop the New Zealand market. Based in Christchurch and employing 14 staff, Instrumatics has been supplying gas detectors and analytical equipment for landfills, wastewater treatment plants, agriculture, and the food industry for over 30 years.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hokkaido is known as the origin of the Hokkaido pumpkin. Cornes is dedicated to dairy farming and places a strong emphasis on innovation and sustainability.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In November 2024, our cooperation with Ceiinc S.A.S<\/a><\/span> in Colombia began\u2014a market with significant growth potential. Based in Cali, a city in southern Colombia, the company primarily supplies measurement and control technology to various industries, with a focus on water and wastewater.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Tetoros is fully dedicated to the biogas sector and recently partnered with German plant manufacturers in the planning of modern biogas facilities in Greece.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
